Year in the Wild Blog

Stars above, flowers below…both work their magic!

Okay, so another sunny day has dawned on the Tankwa Karoo National Park, and although the flowers are the main attraction at this time of year, I’m having serious trouble keeping my eyes off the sky at night.  Last night I set up my camera to do a time lapse of the sunset and stars rising above the koppies and vast plains, which are best seen from the top of Elandsberg. It’s an awesome view point. I’ll upload the video of this soon, but for now, here are some photos from last night.

Anyway, as I’ve written in my blog for Getaway and SANParks this week, I’ve been to the Tankwa Karoo before, for Getaway Magazine, back in 2007, when I wrote an article about this emerging national park.  The flowers at the time were overwhelming in their colours, diversity and beauty. I lost myself, emotionally, within the vast skies, distant horizons and pervading sense of peace. As a person, I can often worry too much, but the Tankwa seemed to absorb all my anxiety.

Now that I’m back here again, I realize – again – how special the Tankwa is. You’re probably going to get tired of me saying this while I’m travelling on Year in the Wild, but every place I’ve been to so far – Table Mountain, West Coast National Park, Cederberg, and now Tankwa Karoo National Park – has taken me in (with all my worries and self-doubt), filtered all the negative stuff from my soul, and I’ve come away feeling renewed and restored!  More than that though, these places help me to believe there is Someone or Something watching over me. (Ah, the big, difficult questions can sometimes be answered by a little flower or a bright star in the night sky! And the Tankwa has millions of these!)

PS. I have to say thanks again to Garret de Vries and Lofty Baadjies at Tankwa Karoo National Park for fixing my leaking fuel tank this week. You guys make me proud to be a South African.

  • Absolute magic! Wish I was a stowaway in your 4×4.

  • Just read the article in Getaway. Will make a serious plan to visit. What time of the year is the oark in full bloom?

    • Hey Roger, best time of year to visit Tankwa Karoo is end of July, early August…the flowers seem to come out there a bit sooner than Namaqualand. Enjoy! And let me know if you need more info.
