Ithala Game Reserve

Located on the edge of South Africa’s eastern escarpment, this is one of the less visited of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, but offers a variety of habitats from an altitude of 400 metres to 1500 metres, including mountain thornveld, riverine forest and plateau grassland. Famous for it’s ancient rocks – some of the geology is around 3 billion years old – Ithala also has a rich cultural history, extending back 200 000 years to the Middle Stone Age, but also more recently when King Shaka of the Zulus moved through the area.
