De Mond Nature Reserve

This 954 hectare coastal reserve protects the stunning estuary of the Heuningnes River, and is situated 26 kilometres south-east of the town of Bredasdorp in the Western Cape. A fragile and fluid ecosystem, De Mond is a hiking, canoeing and birdwatching paradise, with important breeding colonies of Caspian and Damara terns, African black oystercatchers and blue cranes. Fishing is allowed, but only with a permit. Watch out for puffadders in spring, as well as caracal, if you’re lucky.
